Box Brief
Congratulations to Rebecca Cahaly, CFNE Member of the Month!
Let’s get to know Becca a little better with some questions below…

Rebecca

Rebecca

How long have you been at CFNE? What pushed you to come for the first time?

My husband, Glenn, was a member of CFNE and then took a break because he was traveling every week. When his travel slowed down and was ready to get back to CFNE he said he wasn’t going back without me. After additional prodding by my kids, I signed up for elements in the spring with Coach Harry (the best!) and as a bonus, the new intern observed my elements sessions (now my rock star Coach Morgan). After checking my pride at the door, I officially started CFNE in July. Starting was humbling and exciting all at the same time. I have made the 9:30am class my priority and we have a blast! 4:30pm is so welcoming when I miss the morning class. And, I am also loving Open Gym with Coach Whitney on Sundays. I am thankful to be on the road to getting back to fitness. And, I am blessed to now call so many of you friends.

What does a day in the life of Rebecca look like outside of being a rockstar Crossfitter?

We are all early risers and we pack a lot in. Glenn and I have four kids – Joe in 8th grade, Tom and Elizabeth both in 6th grade and Isabel in Preschool. Glenn travels for work but when not traveling he works from home and the 11:30am class with Coach Heather is a priority in his day. Joe, Tom and Elizabeth take the Middle School class with Coaches Geoff, Rachel, Cheryl and Max. All the coaches at CFNE are great role models for them in fitness and life. The rest of the time is filled with volunteer work, sports/activities, lots of laundry and time spent with family and friends.

If you could go to any concert, go backstage, and party all night with any artist (dead or alive) which one would you go to?

I LOVE all kinds of music so that is a tough one. We are huge live music fans and have seen everything from The Go-Go’s to The Who, Ziggy Marley, U2, Dave Matthews, Duran Duran, Peter Frampton, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Allman Brothers, New Kids to Taylor Swift, etc…and I am heading to the Kiss 108 Jingle Ball concert this Thursday night for girls night out (not sure if I should be admitting that :-)…but I would have to say one of my favorite shows was The Black Eyed Peas and it would be amazing to party with them!

Maybe a little more realistic… if you could sing one song to us to fire us UP for the workout, what would you sing?

So many options for that too. I could go old school Classic Rock with something from Queen or Rush, Alt/Rock with Smashing Pumpkins or Nirvana, Hip Hop/Pop with Rihanna, Beastie Boys or Justin Timberlake or Country with Miranda Lambert or Florida Georgia Line…but let’s go with kicking off the WOD with Party In The U.S.A. by Miley Cyrus!

Rumor has it you just got after a race. Spill the beans.

Glenn and our three oldest kids have been running the Wellesley Turkey Trot since it started a few years ago and this year they wanted me to run it with them. I nervously signed up because I don’t consider myself a runner (and my great excuse to bail out was that we didn’t have a jogger stroller to push our youngest in the race). But Glenn and the kids were convinced I could do it and weren’t going to let me off the hook. Coach Morgan was encouraging me as well. So just a couple days before the race I sent an email to find a jogger stroller to borrow, got a reply within minutes and I knew there was no turning back. Now that I was actually participating in this Thanksgiving tradition, I promised myself I would run the whole way. Knowing I would not have to do any burpees, box jumps or weightlifting during the run made me realize this 5K may be easier than a CFNE class and I could actually do it. Coach Cheryl was right – even though I hadn’t run that long in years, doing CrossFit would be all the training I needed. 33:46 later I crossed the finish line and found a very proud family. The kid’s reaction after the race reminded me of the first day I did CFNE when they tackled me with bear hugs in excitement that their mom was starting this new adventure.

Give us a fun-fact about Rebecca that no one may guess… something not even the 9:30am class knows!

I actually spilled a fun-fact recently to two 9:30am crossfitters and I don’t think I should put it in writing…so that may have to be for another time…

And I just have to add…I am so happy to be back to working out and taking care of myself – and with my family – and at a Box that is filled with knowledgeable, amazing, supportive, kind, inspiring coaches, staff and members!  The Bergerons – and all at CFNE – not only build elite athletes and healthier, more athletic regular people but also build a community that takes care of its own and beyond. And what fun we all have!

Becca, your positivity and enthusiasm is absolutely incredible. You have been such a great addition to the family of CFNE. Your progress in 2015 was awesome – and here’s to what we can accomplish in 2016.

Natick Food Drive

A message from Coach Geoff:
CFNE Members,
As the holiday season approaches its appropriate for us to take a step back and realize how truly lucky we are.  We have our family, our health, our friends and our community.  I’m not speaking for everyone, but these are all things that we usually take for granted on a daily basis.  With that being said our mission here at CFNE is to change the world. One athlete, one workout at a time.

If you really think about what that means, its an opportunity for us to grow not only each time we are at the gym, but each time we get home, or into work, or have contact with a complete stranger.  When we do the little things right at the gym, the things no one wants to do on their own when no one is looking it builds character deep within ourselves.  It creates a positive value that we pass on to others, who hopefully realize the good we have created and continue to pass onto others, so on and so on.  Eventually creating more good and changing peoples lives one day at a time.

If some of you have been following social media you have seen or read about Safyre Terry, the little girl who lost everything in an intentionally set house fire back in 2013.  She lost her father, her siblings and parts of her extremities due to severe burns.  This little girls one wish was to receive enough Christmas/Holiday cards to fill the tree her aunt bought her. Full Story HERE.

I think CFNE can really make a difference in this girls life and would love if you all would join me and make Safyre’s Holiday Season a bit more meaningful.

I have set up a box at CFNE that you can drop a card in within the next week, so we can mail them out to her before Christmas comes.

Thank you guys for taking the time to read this and make a difference this holiday season.

A message from Sarah Wilson, devoted mayhem’er:
I volunteer on Thursdays at A Place To Turn, a small emergency food pantry located in a converted Cape house off Speen Street that helps families who live Natick and surrounding towns “shop” for food. Many families are food insecure in metrowest. Mothers come in with small children every day. Hard-working men and women who are employed but can’t make ends meet and many of our elderly neighbors rely on this wonderful organization. A Place to Turn works hard with generous donations from places like CFNE to provide fresh fruit and vegetables and healthy proteins as well as shelf-stable foods.
Nothing should make you feel more proud than doing your part to ensure our neighbors don’t go hungry. Donations come in every day, and they often go right out on the shelf and are in someone’s kitchen that night.  Check expiration dates and please give!

Hugs and high fives.

A message from Coach Conor:

Dear CFNE Family,
I just wanted to take a second to thank you all for this past year at CFNE. It has been one of the most memorable years I’ve had. As some of you have heard, I accepted a position at CrossFit Resilience in Hopkinton where I will be the head coach. I start my full time role there next week. While I will not be around CFNE as much as I have been this past year, I will still be training at CFNE on Wednesdays and Saturdays. So please do not think of this as a goodbye. I still will continue to be a part of this amazing community!
Sincerely,
Conor Nugent

Box Brief

Next week, we enter 2016. As we reminisce on all the great experiences of this past year, our thoughts quickly turn to look ahead, and onto new year goals and resolutions.
There is nothing wrong with annual goals. They are powerful in every sense. But there is a reason we have an monthly goal board at CFNE. 30-Day Goals just work.
If you want something badly, you can do it for 30 days. Think about something you really want to get after… actually think about it. Yeah, you could do it for 30 days, right? Now ask yourself – can you do it for 300 days? That extra “0” may have changed it up a bit. An annual goal doesn’t need to be tackled tomorrow, where a near-sighted goal has a burning fire inside of it.

Maybe you take a different approach this year. Maybe your annual goal is to have 12 independent months of goal setting, and accomplishment. To best our last set of goals in the month prior. To focus purely on the process, and not a moment on the end state. Because as we know, when we embrace the journey, and truly enjoy every second of it, we arrive at the destination before we know it.

As we start to think about new year goals, keep this in mind: Make every day count towards bettering ourselves and the people we care about. “Don’t be fooled by the calendar. There are only as many days in the year as you make use of.”
